There are two ways to look at education. One, education is teaching a discrete set of information to be memorized. For, example, spelling words, multiplication tables or history dates and facts. The other is helping learn how to function in the world. For example, finding and following a map, how to read or how to solve a problem. These are both very important aspects of education but the second one enables to survive.
This is where Toolbelt Theory comes into effect. Originally thought to only apply to learners with disabilities, the Toolbelt Theory actually applies to everyone. This theory actually revolves around the fact that everyone needs tools to function in today's society. From the lens of education the tools are usually assistive technology.

“Toolbelt Theory” suggests that we must teach our students how to analyze tasks, the task-completion environment, their own skills and capabilities, an appropriate range of available tools… and let them begin to make their own decisions” (Socol, 2008).
